AN OVERVIEW OF QUALITY COSTS: TAGUCHI LOSS FUNCTOIN

The quality is not a novel concept in industry so the concept of quality has gradually been improved since mankind started to produce. During radical technological developments the quality concept has been meaningful to producers and buyers. Taguchi was the first quality expert to establish a correlation between the quality and cost and he stated that the loss of quality is the loss of society in this correlation. According to the traditional Goalpost method, the quality of the product is acceptable if the product’s specifications remain in the desired limits. The Goalpost method emphasises the correlation between the quality and cost only from production point of view. In particular, Taguchi strongly emphasizes that the loss of quality is a deviation from the target. According to the Taguchi, if the product out of the spesification limits, % 100 damage is incurred. Furthermore, Taguchi has improved the quality loss function which covers up non-quality concept in financial sector. Recently, Taguchi’s method has been widely used for industrial applications when compared with conventional goalpost philosophy. In this article, we have discussed Taguchi’s quality philosophy and difference between Taguchi method and Goalpost method.

Kalite kavramı bir devrim değildir. Kalite kavramının gelişmesi bir evrimdir. Zaman içerisinde bir çok anlam kazanmıştır. Ancak kalite ve maliyet arasında bir ilişki kurulması, özellikle de bu ilişkide kalitesizliğin topluma verdiği zarar ve oluşturduğu maliyet ilk defa Taguchi tarafından ortaya konmuştur. Taguchi’ye göre kalite kayıpları hem maddi hem de sosyal kayıplardır. Geleneksel kalite anlayışı olan Goalpost yaklaşımı, ürün istenilen spesifikasyon sınırları içerisinde üretilmiş ise kalitenin sağlandığını varsaymaktadır ve kalite-maliyet arasındaki ilişkiyi sadece üretici açısından değerlendirmektedir. Taguchi Metodu ise, kalitesizliğin ürünün hedef değerden sapmaya başlamasıyla oluştuğunu ve ürün spesifikasyon sınırları dışında %100 bozulmanın meydana geldiğini söylemektedir. Bu yüzden kaliteyi sağlamak için yapılacak bütün çalışmalar, ürünü hedef değerde üretmeye yönelik olmalıdır. Taguchi kalite kayıplarını parasal olarak ifade eden kalite kayıp fonksiyonunu geliştirmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Taguchi’nin ileri sürdüğü kalite anlayışı ve Taguchi’nin kalite-maliyet ilişkisine bakışının geleneksel yaklaşımdan farklılıkları derlenmiştir.
